Just like how English books help raise readers by their categorical availabilty and vast range of variety, we needed Tamil books the same way. MurugesanĪfter this book was published and out in the market for sale, my mother realised that in order for children to read Tamil books, they will have to be well versed with the language first. Published by : Vijaya Pathipagam Illustrated by : Mr. My daughter is waiting to get her hands on it but she will have to wait for another year or two as she is just 7 yrs old now! The easy, simple language is its plus! This book was awarded the ‘Best Children’s Literature’ by the Tamil Nadu Kalai Ilakkiya Perumandram. It moves at a fast pace and will be totally unputdownable by children. Illustrations were done by a differently abled and highly talented artist Mr.Murugesan whose pictures were done in black and white and were so apt.Ī single book with just 400 pages that has all the elements of the original classic. However, my mother’s abridged version for children was in simple and easy to follow Tamil. The original classic is not easy to read as it has elaborate descriptions and the language is also complex. When we read my mother’s abridged version for children, we totally loved it and were excited that children can finally get to enjoy this classic. Most of our family have read Kalki’s Ponniyin Selvan and Sivagamiyin sabadham infinite number of times. This was published by Vijaya Pathipagam, Coimbatore. Most importantly, this book can be read easily by children in the age group of 10-12 years. The five volumes of the book were condensed into one single book without spoiling the tempo and storyline of the classic. It was this situation that made my mother jump to some serious action and in 2009, she simplified and wrote an abridged version of the famous Tamil Classic – Kalki’s Ponniyin Selvan. But in Tamil, there were almost none ( or few – like CBT, NBT, Pratham books) for children. In English, there were so many genre of books for children – fairy tales, mystery stories, animal stories, travel stories, sci-fi stories and so much more for every age category. There were only a few original works in Tamil for children – only a handful. Almost all books were translations of famous English books and classics. It was all the same old – Paramarthaguru Kadhaigal, Akbar – Birbal Kadhaigal, Tenali Raman Kadhaigal, Mariyadhai Raman Kadhaigal, Aesops kadhaigal. One major drawback was that there were not much books in Tamil for children. My grandparents, aunts, uncles had read almost all classics in Tamil and English and whenever they spoke about it, we children would be thrilled to hear and also long to read those books ourselves. Our tastes were different but our love for books was mutual.

We often had detailed debates and discussions during dinner time about the books that we all had read. The books gave us so much happiness, relaxation and enriched not only our minds but also our souls. My family is one among the small crowd that still prefers books to everything else. But there were people ( ardent book lovers, book worms ) who somehow managed to keep up with their reading, inspite of the various life style and technological changes happening around them. Thus, the habit of reading books began to diminish gradually. These were far more interesting, easily accessible and more affordable comparatively to books. However, with the advent of technology, people began to lose interest in books, as much of their time was taken up by television, computer and mobile phones. Book reading was an integral part of life in the 1980’s and earlier.
